The Harry James Group is working with a service provider for renewables asset owners. The Solar & Storage Technician is responsible for executing electrical, communications, and commissioning activities for utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This includes performing detailed electrical testing, SCADA/network troubleshooting, cold and hot commissioning, and field integration tasks on high-voltage and medium-voltage systems. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with inverters, transformers, switchgear, control systems, and energy storage components on large-scale renewable power plant sites.
Key Responsibilities
– Perform electrical acceptance testing and functional verification of solar PV systems, inverters, and BESS units
– Execute cold commissioning, startup, and hot commissioning procedures for utility-scale solar and storage assets
– Conduct point-to-point communication checks for SCADA, protection relays, PLCs, HMI, and networking hardware
– Interpret electrical single-line diagrams, installation drawings, and commissioning plans
– Troubleshoot and resolve issues in DC, AC, and control circuits across PV and BESS systems
– Assist in inverter startup, transformer energization, and battery module balancing and verification
– Perform insulation resistance testing (megger), grounding verification, IV curve tracing, and thermal imaging
– Verify firmware versions, upload configuration files, and log commissioning test results
– Complete all QA/QC documentation and redlines, ensure compliance with project specifications
– Follow safety protocols including LOTO, NFPA 70E, and OSHA regulations for energized work
– Coordinate with OEMs, utility representatives, engineers, and construction teams on-site
– Document test procedures, field changes, and commissioning punch-lists for closeout packages
– Participate in site walkdowns and system turnover to operations teams
Qualifications Required:
– High school diploma or equivalent
– 1-3+ years of experience in solar, electrical, or battery storage commissioning
– Strong knowledge of electrical theory, PV system architecture, and energy storage components
– Familiar with commissioning tools such as multimeters, megohmmeters, network analyzers, and data loggers
– Working knowledge of inverters (e.g., SMA, Sungrow, Power Electronics), and BESS (e.g., Fluence, Tesla, CATL)
– Ability to read and interpret construction and electrical documentation
– Proficient in safety procedures and use of PPE for high-voltage work
– Willingness to travel and work in remote field locations
Preferred:
– Associate degree in Electrical Technology, Renewable Energy, or related field
– OSHA 10/30, NFPA 70E required, and CPR/First Aid certifications are preferred
– NETA, NABCEP, or other industry certifications are preferred (not required)
– SCADA/PLC networking or programming experience
