System Engineer – Commercial Support (BESS)

The Harry James Group are working in partnership with a globally recognised EPC who are currently expanding due to current and new projects secured. Our client is looking to appoint a Systems Engineer who will be part of the growing Project Delivery Team and report to the Technical Manager of Project Delivery. The SE are responsible to participate in proposal process, technical contractual review, technical contractual exhibit creation and management, scheduling, oversee the Project Design (Electrical Design Package, Communication, and minor Software), Commissioning, and Technical Support of AC and DC electrical systems associated with utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

Applicant should have a solid understanding of contractual language and terms, fundamental electrical engineering, project management and construction principals, as well as experience designing high power electrical systems. This position will be a member of the internal and customer technical Subject Matter Expert Team for ESS Products and Projects and will work closely with the following group: Business Development, Proposal Teams, Software Delivery, Product Delivery, Project Management, Commissioning Manager, and other various groups to ensure ESS projects fulfil customer functionality and contract requirements.

Minimum Skills Requirements:

– Minimum Bachelors or Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Power Engineering, or equivalent work experience

– 3-5 years of experience with renewable energy with distribution or transmission level Energy Storage System

– Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate highly complex engineering, construction and operational issues

Job Specific Responsibilities:

– Collaborates with the relevant team in technical contract review, define technical requirements to align with product capabilities, installation and commissioning schedules, scope of work and budgetary review.

– Application of lessons learned to identify process improvements, mitigate margin, and cost erosion.

– Serve as main technical point of contact during Proposal period internally and externally.

– Collaborates with the relevant team in the preparation and coordination of projects technical materials.

– Establish and maintain the engineering, design criteria and applicable standards and specifications for the ESS project.

– Interface with external product vendors to understand the specification(s) and function(s) of their product(s) and service(s).

– Specify appropriate system components, calculate component ratings and quantities, and create detailed bills-of material for energy storage projects.

– Review detailed electrical plans produced by others and provide precise organized feedback in a timely manner.

– Review project technical specifications and provide feedback to ensure that project requirements will be met.

– Perform site visits and ESS field inspection in advance to check any risks from engineering side.

– Tier 2 project technical support for internal and external stakeholders.

· Ability to travel to domestic and international project sites and/or vendors (Approx. 10 – 15%), should reside close to a major airport.

Additional Job Requirements

– Familiar with technical contract language

– Familiar with schedule and installation sequencing

– Familiar with lithium-ion battery

– Familiar with relevant codes and standards for ESS and inverters (NEC, IBC, IFC, NFPA, UL, IEC)

– Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate highly complex engineering, construction, and operational issues

– Experience and understand in CAD drawing

– Experience with utility scale energy storage and renewable energy projects and products (bi-directional inverters, various battery chemistries, PV, wind turbines, flywheels, etc.).

– Understanding of Inverter, Converter, Transformer, Battery, Circuit breaker, Fuse, AC/DC power supply electrical equipment.

– Applicant should be able to explain in detail the electrical principals of voltage, current, real and reactive power, energy, charge, AC/DC voltage, single-phase, and three-phase power, and other fundamental electrical engineering concepts.

– Applicant should be able to read and understand drawings of electrical controls. Especially single-line, three-line, fire safety systems, and communication diagrams.

– Knowledge of multimeters, oscilloscopes power quality analysis, harmonics, and their operation.

– Ability to configure and troubleshoot programmable logic controllers (PLC) and industrial electronic equipment (protection relays, inverters, BMS, etc.).

– Experience with industrial control methods and SCADA systems.
